Summary of Expertise:

Listed with other top experts in:

Expert has more than 15 years experience in satellite remote sensing of the cryosphere. Expert received a PhD in geography from the University of Colorado Boulder, in 1996, for her work in understanding Greenland climate variability. Subsequently she has been a research scientist at the University of Colorado, at the Expert's Firm (NSIDC) within the Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES). Her Arctic research interests are wide-ranging, and include atmosphere-sea ice interactions, synoptic climatology, boundary layer problems, numerical weather prediction, climate change and impacts on native communities. She has conducted field work in Greenland, the Alaskan Arctic, and in the lower 48's. Efforts over the past fifteen years have increasingly focused on trying to make sense of the rapid environmental changes being observed in the Arctic and what these changes will mean for the rest of the planet. Expert's work has been featured in numerous magazines and news reports, radio talk shows, and TV documentaries. She has given keynote addresses around the world on Arctic climate issues, briefed former Vice President Al Gore, briefed oil companies and the military on Arctic changes, and participated in climate panels with world renowned scientists. Expert has published more than 50 articles on peer-reviewed journals (20 as first-author) and contributed to several national and international reports on climate change. Expert's 2007 paper “Arctic Sea Ice Decline: Faster than Forecast” has been cited more then 300 times.

Dr, Expert's current position at the Expert's Firm (NSIDC) involves a combination of both data coordinator and team leader for data sets archived and distributed by NSIDC Data Active Archive Center (DAAC) in addition to externally-funded scientific research. For the Data Center, Expert is responsible for passive microwave-derived sea ice, snowmelt and ice motion data products and polar atmospheric products derived from the TIROS-N Operational Vertical Sounder (TOVS) instrument. As a research scientist Expert conducts basic and applied research in support of NSIDC and CIRES Cryospheric and Polar Processes (CPP) goals. Current research projects include – hydrological impacts of a declining Arctic sea ice cover; current and future projections of Arctic climate change; climate interactions between the sea ice, the Greenland ice sheet and the boreal land; development of sea ice albedo from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) and Multi-angle Imaging SpectroRadiometer (MISR) instruments; analysis of seasonal and inter-annual variations of Arctic surface albedo and temperature, including key outlet glaciers in Greenland where rapid thinning is taking place; development of online interactive analysis web pages; analysis of timing of melt pond formation and drainage for the Greenland ice sheet.
