Summary of Expertise:

Listed with other top experts in:

He has been involved in development engineering management and new product development management for most of his professional career. He has assembled teams of engineers and technicians that have worked together superbly and have produced several successes, as measured by products introduced to their respective markets. He was trained in the school of "integrated product development" by a Fortune 100 corporation with a long track record of success, and was later able to transfer those skills to small and medium company environments, and to apply to his clients' own product development needs during his full-time consulting years. He has been responsible for, or heavily involved with, many "firsts" in various industries. The first display pager by Motorola, the first synthesized radio by Motorola, the first barcode based wireless refueling management system, the first pipe and cable locator that includes a remote radio link, the first collapsible magnetic locator, etc. The products he has created, designed, and introduced to market span across many areas within the electronic engineering field, including: digital electronics, microcontroller software and hardware, analog electronics, digital signal processing, LCD driving and control, voltage regulators, power circuits, high voltage power supplies, electromagnetic coupling, low level signal processing and filtering, user interface design, membrane switches, surface mount technology, radio transmission and UART interface. He is uniquely keen to the need to work closely with the marketing and manufacturing organizations, as well as with current and potential customers to ensure the successful introduction of a product to market. An engineering "wonder" that can't be manufactured or that customers find annoying to use will never become a market success!. In that regard he is uniquely qualified to have a broader view of product development, yet maintain a high level of technical involvement and knowledge that earns the respect of his team of engineers and ultimately leads to a successful product backed by a solid engineering design.

Electronics engineering, digital, and analog circuit design have been the core of his career, whether he was actually designing circuits and systems, teaching the theory of design to engineering students, or managing projects with several engineers involved in these areas. From using discrete logic gates for simple control and command functions to gate arrays and PLD (Programmable Logic Devices), digital circuits have been a constant component of most, if not all, the products he designed or was involved with throughout his career. No design was free of analog circuits and most were battery operated, meaning that there was always a need for voltage regulators, both linear and switched mode, voltage doublers, inverters, and converters. And since many of the products he designed dealt with RF or low level noisy signals, he has been involved in the design of front end amplifiers, filters, and signal conditioners, as well as A/D and D/A converters to enable the signals to be processed by a microcontroller or DSP. In addition to digital and analog circuit design, most of the products and projects he has been involved with included a microprocessor or microcontroller and embedded memory. So he has also been responsible for software design, using assembly language and C language. The bulk of his software design dealt with real time signal manipulation and with user interface aspects of the product, giving him a solid knowledge of the details associated with driving LCD's, optoelectronic devices, membrane switches and synchronous and asynchronous interfaces.

Consulting Services:
Selected Consulting Examples:
  • He designed and implemented a barcode-based, wireless solution for a client whose company provided a mobile refueling service to commercial fleets. This led to his first patent and launched the company's IPO. The company is now a successful public enterprise and continues to use essentially the same system.
  • He was instrumental in the design, implementation, and maintenance of an electronic messaging system for a commuter train running along the east coast of South Florida. The system is still in use today and is essential to the operation of this valuable public transportation alternative.
  • He provided advice to a condominium association about the effects of exposure to microwave radiation from cell towers. The association used the technical findings to decide whether or not they would lease space to a cellular carrier for the installation of such tower.
  • He designed and implemented firmware for a portable ultrasound scanner used in veterinary applications. The system architecture was based on an advanced Motorola microcontroller and was written in C and assembly language. At the time the scanner was the lightest and smallest unit of its kind in the market.
  • He was part of the design team that incorporated a wireless link into a pipe and cable locator for the first time, leading to his second patent. This design innovation produced increased productivity, flexibility, and ease of use into an instrument that traditionally consists of two pieces that can be as far apart as a thousand to two thousand feet.
